Business cessation
The company has stopped the activities that required VAT registration. Establish the actual cessation date and document the licence or liquidation status, remaining transactions and expected future supplies.
Eligibility · EmaraTax application · final VAT return
Need to cancel a UAE VAT registration or close a TRN? Get the reason, evidence, deadline and final tax position right before applying to the Federal Tax Authority.
SAIF Chartered Accountants supports mainland and free-zone businesses through the VAT deregistration assessment, application and related return work. A closed licence alone does not cancel VAT registration.

The short answer
VAT deregistration is an FTA decision to end a taxable person’s VAT registration from an approved effective date. The registrant submits the application in EmaraTax, explains the correct reason and provides the supporting records. Outstanding returns, tax and penalties still need attention; the FTA’s digital certificate is the evidence of completed deregistration.
The business-licence authority and the FTA handle separate matters. If you are also closing a company, coordinate this tax work with the liquidation and licence-cancellation process without treating one approval as a substitute for the other.
Reason before form
The route depends on what changed in the taxable person’s business. A decrease in sales, a cancelled licence and a changed group structure are not the same fact pattern.
The company has stopped the activities that required VAT registration. Establish the actual cessation date and document the licence or liquidation status, remaining transactions and expected future supplies.
The business’s taxable supplies have changed. Test the correct threshold route, historic turnover, expected next 30 days and original registration basis rather than assuming any drop below AED 375,000 qualifies.
A sale, branch/head-office arrangement, duplicate TRN, change of legal form or VAT-group event may require a specific reason and supporting evidence. Do not use the ordinary closure reason without checking the structure.
That is the mandatory registration threshold; the voluntary threshold is AED 187,500. The FTA publishes distinct supporting-document routes for supplies below the voluntary threshold and between the voluntary and mandatory thresholds. Eligibility also turns on the company’s circumstances and taxable supplies, not only one year’s revenue number.

The FTA’s current service card says an obligatory deregistration application must be submitted within 30 business days from the date the obligation arose. Identify and document that trigger.
The published estimate begins when a completed application is received. An information request can add a further 30-business-day response period after updated documents are submitted.
The FTA says the final return and payable tax are due no later than 28 days from the effective deregistration date, described as the end of the final tax period.

How SAIF helps
We start by checking the company profile, not by selecting a convenient option on a form. The proposed scope may include the VAT assessment, records review, application preparation, response to FTA queries and final-return work. We agree responsibilities and access before filing.
Confirm who is registered, why the TRN was issued, the relevant supplies and the date a deregistration condition arose. Decide whether the application is mandatory or another route is available.
Tie sales, purchases, VAT ledgers and submitted returns to the accounting records. Identify refunds, unpaid tax, credit notes, assets, stock and transactions around cessation.
Select the EmaraTax reason and assemble the current FTA documents for that reason: turnover template, licence/closure proof, declarations, resolutions or other requested evidence.
Submit through the taxable person’s EmaraTax account with the proper authority. Track the reference, information requests and the FTA decision; an application is not an approved cancellation.
File the final VAT return by its deadline, settle balances and retain the digital deregistration certificate, effective date and supporting records. Coordinate any separate Corporate tax or licence work.

Evidence depends on the reason
The FTA’s document table changes with the selected basis and sub-reason. A closure case can require licence-cancellation evidence, a liquidation letter or board resolution. A low-turnover case may need the FTA’s financial-turnover template and a signed statement about expected supplies. Branch, duplicate-TRN, sole-establishment and change-of-form cases have different evidence.
Before submission, reconcile the supporting figures to VAT returns and accounting records. Incomplete or contradictory information can lead to an FTA request and delay. The exact file list in the current FTA service table should be checked for the chosen application reason.
Do not stop at application
Until the FTA confirms the effective deregistration date, check the returns and obligations shown in EmaraTax. Bring sales and purchase tax, import records, supplier credits, assets and any closure transactions into the correct periods. An accepted application does not erase earlier filing periods or tax balances.
The FTA states that the digital deregistration certificate becomes available after the final return is submitted and approved and outstanding tax and penalties are settled. Keep the certificate, decision, tax returns and payment confirmations with the company’s records.
Choose the right workstream
SAIF can provide a tailored scope rather than a fixed package. The FTA application itself has no government service fee; professional advisory, accounting and filing work is quoted separately.
Eligibility and trigger-date assessment, turnover analysis, EmaraTax evidence, application, FTA information requests, return reconciliation and final tax close as agreed.
Company liquidation, free-zone or mainland licence cancellation and any liquidator report follow their own process and may need a separate engagement.
Corporate tax deregistration is independent of VAT. Check the entity’s Corporate tax obligations rather than assuming the VAT decision settles them.
Common search questions
For an actual application, match these general answers to the current FTA service requirements and your company’s registration history.
First establish the legal basis and effective date for VAT deregistration. Prepare the supporting turnover and business documents, then submit the VAT De-Register application through the taxable person’s EmaraTax account. Continue to manage outstanding returns and liabilities until the FTA confirms deregistration.
The FTA service page states that a mandatory VAT deregistration application must be submitted within 30 business days from the date the deregistration obligation arose. Identify the actual trigger date and confirm the current rule before applying; it is not necessarily the date the licence is finally cancelled.
No. Trade-licence cancellation and FTA VAT deregistration are separate processes. A licence document may support the application, but the VAT registration remains a tax matter until the FTA processes it and makes the deregistration certificate available.
Not automatically. AED 375,000 is the mandatory VAT registration threshold, while AED 187,500 is the voluntary threshold. The FTA’s deregistration service distinguishes businesses below the voluntary threshold from those between the two thresholds and requests different evidence. Review taxable supplies, the registration basis and expected activity before choosing a reason.
Yes, a free-zone licence does not by itself prevent an eligible VAT registrant from applying. Assess the entity’s supplies, taxable turnover, imports, registration history and future business activity. Free-zone company closure and VAT deregistration remain separate authority processes.
They depend on the application reason. The FTA lists, for example, licence-cancellation evidence, liquidation letter or board resolution for closure cases; turnover templates and declarations for threshold cases; and other specific evidence for branches, duplicate TRNs or changes of legal form. Use the current FTA document table for the selected reason.
The FTA says the final VAT return and any payable tax must be submitted and settled no later than 28 days from the effective deregistration date, which it describes as the end of the final tax period. Check the effective date shown in the FTA decision and reconcile all outstanding periods.
Do not stop filing simply because an application has been submitted or a trade licence has expired. Check the periods and obligations shown in EmaraTax and any FTA notices until the effective deregistration date is confirmed. Resolve outstanding returns and liabilities as part of the closure.
The FTA service card currently estimates 30 business days from receipt of a completed application. If further documents are requested, it says a further 30 business days may be needed after the updated submission. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed approval date.
The FTA lists its VAT deregistration service fee as free. Professional work to assess eligibility, reconcile records, prepare the application, respond to FTA queries and complete final returns is separate and quoted according to scope.
The FTA says a digital certificate becomes available in EmaraTax when the final return has been submitted and approved, outstanding tax and penalties are settled and the application is approved. Save the certificate and effective-date confirmation with the company’s permanent tax records.
No. VAT and Corporate tax are distinct registrations, with different conditions, forms, deadlines and final filing obligations. Closing a company may require both processes, but neither is automatically completed by the other.
A VAT group has a representative member and group registration. A member leaving, a group ending or an entity closing should be assessed against the group’s actual structure and FTA procedures; do not treat an entity-level closure as automatic cancellation of the group TRN.
We can review the facts, outstanding periods, records and FTA correspondence, then propose an appropriate scope for the application and final-return work. We cannot guarantee acceptance, remove a penalty by promise or assume one document list fits every business.
