Corporate tax for Freelancers in the UAE
Are you taxed because you hold a freelance licence, earn from overseas clients or cross a revenue threshold? The answer starts with who carries on the business and the calendar-year turnover—not the licence label alone.

The short answer
When is a freelancer subject to UAE Corporate tax?
A natural person carrying on a Business or Business Activity in the UAE is within Corporate tax when the total turnover from those activities exceeds AED 1 million during a Gregorian calendar year. Turnover means gross business income before expenses. Wages and qualifying personal-investment and real-estate-investment income are not included in this test.
Someone below the threshold should not register solely for natural-person Corporate tax because of that business. Someone above it may need to register and file even where deductible expenses leave little profit or no tax payable. The FTA’s natural-person summary sets out the trigger; its detailed guide explains the income categories and examples.
Get the legal form right
Freelance permit, sole establishment or one-person company?
The word “freelancer” is not itself a tax classification. Check the person named on the licence and the contracts before deciding whose revenue, records and return are involved.
Individual freelancer
An individual providing design, technology, consulting or other services in their own name is a natural person. A freelance permit may authorise the activity, but does not by itself make the holder a separate company or create an exemption.
Sole establishment
A sole establishment is generally linked to the individual owner for Corporate tax. Combine the owner’s business activities for the AED 1 million test rather than applying a new limit to each licence or branch.
Incorporated company
An LLC—even one with only one shareholder—is a separate juridical person. Its registration, taxable income and filing requirements must be assessed under the company rules. The natural-person AED 1 million threshold is not a general LLC exemption.
A free-zone freelancer permit should not be confused with a company’s Qualifying Free Zone Person assessment. Legal form, activity and income all matter.
Classify each income stream
What counts towards the AED 1 million turnover test?
Use gross business income from all relevant activities. The exclusions depend on the nature of the income, not on how it appears in a bank statement.
Generally include in business turnover
- Fees from freelance and consultancy services carried on in the UAE.
- Revenue from a sole establishment, e-commerce or another business activity of the same person.
- Fees billed to clients abroad where they relate to the UAE-conducted business.
- Relevant in-kind business payments valued appropriately; turnover is assessed before business costs.
Generally exclude when the conditions apply
- Wages: salary and employment income under an employment relationship.
- Personal Investment Income: personal-capacity investing that is not conducted through, or required to be conducted through, a licence and is not a commercial business.
- Real Estate Investment Income: qualifying property income from activity not conducted through, or requiring, a licence.
A licensed property business is not automatically covered by the real-estate-investment exclusion. Consult the FTA’s property guide when ownership, management or trading activity blurs the line. Likewise, an invoice issued to a foreign client can remain part of a UAE business. A genuinely unrelated activity carried on wholly outside the UAE needs its own facts-and-circumstances review.
Three common situations
How does the threshold work in practice?
These simplified examples show why it is risky to use one bank balance or one licence as the test. Actual treatment follows the contracts, activities and FTA rules.
AED 800k fees + AED 400k salary
The employment salary is excluded. Business turnover is AED 800,000, so it does not exceed the natural-person AED 1 million trigger for that year.
AED 1.2m fees − AED 900k costs
The AED 1.2 million gross business turnover crosses the threshold even though profit before tax adjustments is only AED 300,000. Registration and a return may be required; tax payable is calculated separately.
AED 700k services + AED 500k trading
If both activities belong to the same natural person and are relevant UAE business activities, the combined AED 1.2 million exceeds the threshold. Two permits do not mean two AED 1 million allowances.
The FTA guide provides its own worked examples, including salary alongside a business and multiple activities. These examples are explanatory and omit tax adjustments.
Registration and filing
When do freelancers register and submit a return?
The natural-person Tax Period is the Gregorian calendar year. When business turnover first exceeds AED 1 million in that year, the individual generally applies for Corporate tax registration by 31 March of the following year. A required return is generally due within nine months after year end—normally 30 September of the following year.
For example, if a freelancer first crosses the threshold during 2026, the ordinary registration deadline is 31 March 2027, and the 2026 return would ordinarily be due by 30 September 2027. Check the FTA account and any applicable directions before relying on dates. The FTA’s registration notice gives the following-year timetable.
After registration, one natural person generally has one Corporate tax registration and one return covering all relevant business activities. Falling below AED 1 million in a later year is not, by itself, a reason to deregister while business continues. If all business activities cease, review the separate deregistration obligation and timing.
Separate three different numbers
What tax would a freelancer actually pay?
Turnover, Taxable Income and relief eligibility are different calculations. Being required to register does not mean paying 9% on gross invoices.
Natural-person entry test
Gross turnover from relevant business activity must exceed this amount in a calendar year to bring that activity within the natural-person Corporate tax regime.
Ordinary 0% income band
Once subject to tax, the ordinary rate is generally 0% on the first AED 375,000 of Taxable Income and 9% on the portion above it. Taxable Income follows the accounts and tax adjustments.
Small Business Relief revenue ceiling
An eligible Resident Person may elect this relief if revenue does not exceed AED 3 million in the current and all prior Tax Periods, with other conditions. It is not automatic.
Small Business Relief now extends to periods ending by 31 December 2029
The Ministry of Finance announced the extension of Small Business Relief to Tax Periods ending on or before 31 December 2029. Older articles saying the relief ends in 2026 are out of date. An eligible person makes the election in the return; registration and filing still matter. Where relief applies, it can simplify the result, but consider whether a year’s losses, future revenue or other tax choices change the best approach.
Do not confuse this relief with the 0% tax band. The AED 3 million figure is a revenue condition for an elective relief; AED 375,000 is an ordinary Taxable Income rate band; AED 1 million is the natural-person business turnover trigger.
How SAIF can help
Make the classification and filing defensible
SAIF Chartered Accountants can review the person or company behind each licence, reconcile calendar-year revenue across activities, classify excluded income and document the registration decision. Where the natural person is in scope, we can help prepare the accounts, Corporate tax calculation and return under an agreed engagement.
We also assess separate VAT obligations, overseas-client transactions and whether Small Business Relief should be elected. If you operate through an LLC instead of personally, we move to the company Corporate tax framework rather than applying the individual threshold.
Bring these to the first review

- Contracts and invoices, grouped by activity and calendar year
- Accounting ledger, expense records and bank reconciliations
- Details of salary, investments and property income to classify separately

Questions people ask
Freelancer Corporate tax FAQs
Answers here are general guidance. A contract, property activity, company structure or cross-border arrangement can change the result.
01Do freelancers pay Corporate tax in the UAE?+
A freelancer who is a natural person is within UAE Corporate tax when they conduct a Business or Business Activity in the UAE and the combined business turnover exceeds AED 1 million in a Gregorian calendar year. Registration and a return may then be required even if the final tax payable is zero.
02Is the AED 1 million Corporate tax threshold based on profit or revenue?+
It is based on turnover: gross business income before deducting costs. The amount of Corporate tax payable is calculated later from Taxable Income after the applicable accounting and tax adjustments.
03What if my freelance revenue is exactly AED 1 million?+
The natural-person threshold is exceeded only when qualifying business turnover is more than AED 1 million in the calendar year. Exactly AED 1 million does not exceed it. Keep records that establish the calculation and review any other business activities.
04Does my salary count towards the freelancer AED 1 million test?+
No. Wages from employment are excluded. If you also work independently, count your business turnover separately from employment salary. Calling client fees a salary does not make them wages without an employment relationship.
05Do I add revenue from two freelance activities?+
Yes. A natural person combines turnover from all their UAE Businesses or Business Activities, including a sole establishment and related overseas sales, where applicable. They do not get a fresh AED 1 million threshold for each trade licence or client.
06I invoice overseas clients. Does foreign income count?+
It can. A foreign customer does not by itself remove fees earned from a Business or Business Activity conducted in the UAE. The FTA guide distinguishes unrelated business conducted wholly outside the UAE from income connected to the UAE activity; the facts and records determine the treatment.
07Do rental income and investment returns count?+
Wages, qualifying Personal Investment Income and qualifying Real Estate Investment Income are excluded from the natural-person business threshold. The investment and property exclusions have conditions; licensed or business property activity requires a separate assessment.
08Is a free-zone freelance permit automatically exempt from Corporate tax?+
No. A licence or permit does not replace the natural-person business test, and the Qualifying Free Zone Person rules for a free-zone legal entity should not be assumed to apply to an individual. Review the legal form, activities and turnover.
09Is a one-person LLC treated like a freelancer?+
No. An incorporated LLC is a separate juridical person with its own Corporate tax registration and return obligations. A sole establishment is generally part of its natural-person owner for this purpose. Identify the legal entity before using a threshold.
10When must a freelancer register for Corporate tax?+
Once a natural person exceeds AED 1 million of qualifying business turnover in a calendar year, the registration application is due by 31 March of the following calendar year under the FTA timeline. For example, a person first crossing it in 2026 would ordinarily apply by 31 March 2027.
11When is the natural-person Corporate tax return due?+
The natural person’s Tax Period is the Gregorian calendar year. A required Corporate tax return is generally due within nine months after year end—normally 30 September of the next year. Confirm any FTA-specific direction for your account.
12Does crossing AED 1 million mean I pay 9% on all invoices?+
No. The threshold determines whether the natural-person business is within Corporate tax. Ordinary tax rates generally apply to Taxable Income: 0% on the first AED 375,000 and 9% on the amount above it. Turnover is not the tax base.
13Can a freelancer claim Small Business Relief?+
An eligible Resident Person may elect Small Business Relief if revenue does not exceed AED 3 million in the relevant and all prior Tax Periods, subject to the remaining conditions. The Ministry of Finance has extended its availability to Tax Periods ending on or before 31 December 2029. It is an election, not an automatic exemption from registration or filing.
14What if my turnover drops below AED 1 million next year?+
Do not assume that an existing Corporate tax registration disappears. If you continue any Business or Business Activity, the FTA guide says you should not apply to deregister merely because annual turnover falls below the threshold. Review the return and account status for that period.
15Is VAT registration the same as Corporate tax registration?+
No. VAT is assessed separately on taxable supplies and imports, with a different mandatory registration threshold for UAE-resident businesses. A freelancer can have a VAT obligation before reaching the Corporate tax natural-person threshold, or have both.
16What records should I send for a freelancer Corporate tax review?+
Provide your trade or freelance permits, Emirates ID and EmaraTax details, a calendar-year sales listing by activity, contracts and invoices, expense ledger, bank reconciliations and details of salary, personal investments or property income that must be classified separately.
